Malé Airport
Malé Airport is located on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll, next to the capital island Malé. Full official name is Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, named after the man who helped modernise the Maldives and first president of the republic. It is the main airport into the Maldives, it is well connected with major airports around the world, and serves as the main gateway into the Maldives for tourists. The airport opened to the public on 12 April 1966. It later underwent renovation and upgrading to bring it up to international standards, inaugurated with its new name on 11 November 1981. As of today the largest airline to fly here is Sri Lankan Airlines. Other major airlines who fly here from the UK are Emirates, Qatar and BA. With BA operating the only direct flights from Gatwick. Hulhule Island Hotel is the only hotel found on the same island as the airport. No more than a 5 minute drive from the airport and there is a complimentary hotel shuttle bus available around the clock. Malé is a 10 minute trip by boat from the airport island. Hulhule Island Hotel also provides scheduled complimentary transfers between the hotel and Male island. Transfers by speedboat to your island resorts are available from just outside the airport. For resorts that are a distance away you will need to catch a seaplane. Malé Airport has the largest seaplane operation in the world. Seaplane flights are available on Trans Maldivian Airways or Maldivian Air Taxi and are caught from the Airport. You can also catch the airport ferry which takes regular trips between the airport and Malé city.
