Gan Airport is an international airport located on the island of Gan in Maldives. It has the airport code of GAN and is one of 3 international airports in Maldives, the other being Velana and Hanimaadhoo. The airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It lies at an elevation of 6 feet (2 metres) above sea level. To get here from Malé Velana airport you will cross the equator.
The airport was originally built by the British as a staging post for the RAF during the 1950s and was handed over to the Maldivian Government in 1976. The airport was abandoned for several years and felll into disrepair. Funding was eventually found to develop the island, and GAN Airport began it’s life as a civilian domestic airport.
In the Maldivian National Development Plan of the early 1980s it was proposed to develop Gan for International commercial operations. In 1998 government decided to upgrade further facilities so that International flights could fly direct from regional hubs without having to land at Male International Airport.
Under this upgrade a new Passenger Terminal, with an approximate check-in capacity of processing 180 passengers per hour and a new Refueling Facility for jets was built along with additional navigational equipment and airfield lighting. . The airport runway can cater upto Boeing 777 aircrafts. Passengers with special needs are given special attention, whether it is a wheelchair or stretcher case. Porter service is available on request. All this was done in order to support tourism and other economic activity in the south Maldives.

The one international destination from here is to Colombo (CMB) in Sri Lanka. The flight time is approx 1h 55min. Maldivian Airlines is the largest airline here by the number of departures. With around 29 scheduled take-offs every week.

There is a planning for a Seaplane base at Gan International Airport , which will connect to the neighbouring atolls and deliver you straight to your destination resort. As of Oct 2023 there is no opening date for this.
